More sad news: Alan Cumberland, legendary timpanist and teacher passes on...
Alan Cumberland, the iconic timpanist, teacher and inspirational musician has sadly passed away in Brisbane, Australia. Although he started his musical life playing the violin and piano he was to become the principal timpanist in the London Philharmonic Orchestra for twenty years, working with most of the great conductors at the time.

He relinquished his position with the LPO in 1987 to join the faculty of the Queensland Conservatorium where he was Senior Lecturer in Timpani and Percussion, Resident Conductor of the Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra and Principal of the Young Conservatorium. Alan then joined the staff of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in September 1998 as Head of Woodwind, Brass and Percussion, eventually returning to Brisbane to enjoy his retirement.

He was much loved by family, friends, colleagues and students and will be fondly remembered as a huge influence in the lives of those who knew him and benefitted from his teaching and performances.
