Johann Hummel's 'Military Septet'
Military first movements were all the rage in Vienna at the turn of the nineteenth century. Scored for piano, flute, clarinet, trumpet, violin, cello and double bass, the trumpet is called upon to colour the music militaristically. The piece undoubtedly inspired Saint-Saens to use the trumpet in his own Septet
Carnival of Venice arr. Malcolm Smith: Paul Archibald with the National Philharmonic Orchestra cond. Charles Gerhardt
Malcolm Smith was a good friend and colleague of mine - we shared a similar upbringing within the ranks of the Salvation Army. He became a principal player in some top London orchestras such as the BBC Concert Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. He was also a talented arranger and this recording features an exotic arrangement he made, originally for himself with the BBC Concert Orchestra, here featuring the National Philharmonic Orchestra.
