Paul is Head of Wind, Brass and Percussion at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. All the students within the WBP department at Guildhall are aspiring to perform professionally and so their individual lessons are designed to cover the different skills associated with professional performance
If you are considering a performing career you should choose a music college by its artistic standards and performance opportunities. The pedigree of your teacher, the skills you will acquire and your chances to perform are all central to your musical development.
As Head of the Wind, Brass and Percussion department I am confident that artistic excellence lies at the heart of music education at the Guildhall School.
We have an inspiring and dedicated professorial staff who are performers and teachers of the highest calibre. Their skill and knowledge combine with a rigorous training programme to offer you all that is needed to help you to attain your goals.
Strong collaborative links to many internationally renowned artists, ensembles, and chamber groups mean that the School can offer once in a lifetime performance, composition and mentoring opportunities. Recent visiting artists include Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Colin Davis, John Adams, Alison Balsam, German Brass, Sir George Martin and Murray Perahia. Collaboration with the School’s immediate neighbours the London Symphony Orchestra and the Barbican Centre has created a new ‘Centre for Orchestra’ programme which will give the highest quality orchestral training available.
The successes of students from the Wind, Brass and Percussion department reflect their diversity and the ways in which the department seeks to support each individual's developing talents. Orchestral appointments of recent students include Angela Barnes (2nd Horn, London Symphony Orchestra, and first ever female member of the horn section), Cormac Henry (Principal Flute, Royal Liverpool Orchestra), Tim Thorpe (1st Horn, BBC National Orchestra of Wales), and Chris Richards (Principal Clarinet, Northern Sinfonia). Many ex-students are pursuing particular interests through freelance careers; for example Joby Burgess, percussion, with Ensemble Bash and New Noise; and Matthew Smith, flute, has published compositions with United Music Publishers. Alongside input from the departmental staff, regular classes, workshops and masterclasses are given by visiting artists. Recent visitors include Francoix Leleux (oboe), Jiggs Whigham (trombone), Michael Cox (flute), Stefan Dohr (horn) and German Brass
