Schools workshops - an example

  Scott Bywater
A one-day visit should be a busy, lively and stimulating day for everyone. Although the workshops need to remain flexible in content an organised structure is useful to maximise the potential of the visit.

Below is a suggested plan based on a day at Putney High School Junior Department. The focal point of the day was the performance to Years 3 - 6 of pieces that had been developed and adapted during the workshops that took place throughout the day.

08.00 Percussion arrives and set up in hall
09.00 45' demonstration recital for Reception class. The performance included a brief description of how music developed with reference to key composers but mainly focused on the sounds and pitches of the instruments, the importance of vibrations, the different timbres of drums and the dynamic ranges available. One of the pieces was 'hands on' for the children as extra percussion players were required!
09.45 Repeat of above format for Years 1 & 2
Plenty of activity for everyone, including the teacher!
10.15Break
10.35 Workshop with junior orchestra. The purpose of this workshop was to create and rehearse a piece for performance. We took an existing piece of music from the Flexiband Series and worked with the players to create and develop specific string, wind and brass parts and to formulate percussion parts for tuned and non-pitched instruments. The piece was adapted to allow for solo passages and improvised sections.
12.30 Lunch
13.40 Paul works with the brass players at the school on aspects of technique and work on a short piece for brass septet. Technical issues such as breathing, posture, articulation and sound are discussed and also effective ways to practice. Ben and Scott work with a group of children creating a piece for percussion
15.00 Performance to Years 3 – 6 of orchestral, percussion and brass pieces developed in workshops.
15.30 School finishes and clear equipment
