| Masterclasses
are an essential learning opportunity for all instrumentalists
and Paul regularly gives classes at colleges and universities
throughout the UK. These classes are vital for both student and
teacher as they give the student an opportunity to perform publicly,
often in front of peer groups, and allows the teacher to see and
hear a student in a performance environment.
A masterclass can often be a dilemma for the performer. Should the chosen work stretch the performer to the absolute limit in the hope that this shows off range, stamina and virtuosity so that the teacher and audience will be highly impressed? Or should the chosen piece be within the 'comfort zone' which allows the player to get a good nights sleep the previous evening and enables the performance to sound relaxed, in control and totally focussed!?

Needless to say, my advice is definitely the second option! Part
of the development process is to personally experience performances
that are positive, concentrated yet relaxed as this is so important
for self-esteem and, after all, is the reason we work so hard in
the practice room! Choosing a piece that allows musical strengths
to predominate is, psychologically, the way to build confidence
and ultimately the professional way to organise solo repertoire.
Listed here are works that would be suitable to perform in a masterclass.
The pieces included are not necessarily the most difficult even
though there are some included that are very virtuosic!. This list
is by no means definitive and there are many others that could be
included in a repertoire list. All the pieces are original works
for trumpet and piano and do not include concertos or baroque repertoire.
